Psalm 48:v1 Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, his holy mountain.
The psalmist draws our gaze away from a private, self-contained faith and places it firmly within the gathered people of God. Here, on His holy mountain, the Lord makes Himself known, not because the place is inherently sacred, but because He has chosen to dwell among His people.
We’re often tempted to measure God’s greatness by our circumstances: when life is steady, He seems near; when it’s uncertain, He feels distant. Yet Psalm 48 reminds us that God’s greatness doesn’t fluctuate with our feelings or circumstances. It’s fixed and objective, grounded in His unchanging character rather than in the shifting landscape of our experience. To praise God rightly, then, isn’t merely to feel something, but to see something, to behold His majesty as it’s revealed in His Word and among His people. In this way, the church becomes a living testimony, not to human strength, but to divine faithfulness. Ultimately, this “city of God” points us forward to that unshakable kingdom secured by Christ. In Him, God’s presence is no longer confined to a mountain, but dwells within His people.
